- ALL the printer companies do this. The printer polls the chip regularly. When it is empty it sends a signal to the chip. Unless you use a chip resetter, refilling won't work. Anyway, refilling is a dangerous practice. It may work a few times but the one time it fails will cost you more than anything you saved. Look at http://ccs-digital.com/refills.html for details. Using new compatible cartridges is a good way to save money. Someone I know brought their Canon printer to the authorized Canon repair center. When they picked it up, the tech wanted to demonstrate that it worked but it was out of ink. He put in new cartridges and the person noticed they were NOT Canon! He asked the tech why they were using non-Canon cartridges and he answered they worked just as well and were cheaper.
